Some more information. We are using e2Studio, but the project uses an external Makefile. The linker is linking against optlib, but in e2Studio, the built in includes are pointing to: /rx-elf/rx-elf/lib/gcc/rx-elf/4.8-GNURX_v15.02/include /rx-elf/rx-elf/lib/gcc/rx-elf/4.8-GNURX_v15.02/include-fixed /rx-elf/rx-elf/rx-elf/include I don't see the option you highlighted above anywhere: Project Properties -> Library Generator -> Settings -> Select library (newlib/optimized).

__RAND_MAX is the same value. I 00000000 :316: RAND_MAX = 2147483647 I 00000000 :317: __RAND_MAX = 2147483647

I just confirmed that we are linking against optlib, however if I print out the value of RAND_MAX at the beginning of the application, the value is RAND_MAX = 2147483647. This implies that the rand() function isn't using RAND_MAX to determine the max value, but something else. Perhaps __RAND_MAX?

We were under the impression that we are using newlib. What makes the determination about which library is built and being used?

Why does rand() return (max) 32767 when RAND_MAX is defined as 0x7fffffff?
